By using the Atmel Wan Driver page on SourceForge and these tips drivers can be modified to support other wireless adapters. This will get unsupported USB WLAN adapters working with the Mac."

  • My parents have an iMac running OS 9. I would like to be able to connect to it wirelessly, but the $89 price tag on the AirPort card is a little steep. If I could get a cheaper USB one, I might be able to set it up. Granted, I don't know about connectivity speeds, what with USB's inherent issues.

And why doesn't anyone make FireWire Wireless Adaptors?! I want to connect my CD-RW to my laptop wirelessly! Oh, wait, nevermind.

How is $89 a little steep when the best price for the Airport card on Pricewatch is $45. Add in all the time you spend making it work and screwing around with it and you are WAY past $89.

Have you looked at a product similar to this: http://www.dlink.com/products/dwl810/
Worked very well with an existing Airport Netowork and an iMac.
  • Hopefully I can get this working on my friends Ibook so she can use it. I never thought twice about if it would or would not work until I hooked it up. :/
  • Using a similar trick me and my buddy turned Linksys WEP11 access points into DLINK DWLsomething-or-other. This way I got cheaper hw with much better features.

The easier way to do hacks like this is to install the package, then cd to /System/Library/Extensions/drivername.kext/Content s and edit the Info.plist file. After doing that, remove /System/Library/Extensions.mkext and /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache and reboot.

Changing a couple numbers in an XML file is hardly a "hack" if you ask me (and I'm a conceited git, so I know what I'm talking about).

It's common to do this with digital cameras as well, when the mac won't support a new model.

When you start injecting shim code into running executables to rewrite USB commands on the fly, drop us a note. That's a true hack!

This is just editing a config file.
  • Belkin files a suit under the DMCA and cease and desist's someone to death. (or poverty from legal fees)
